A Conserved Remittance House Recast by WOHA

From Chye Hua Seng Wee Kee to Contemporary Hotel

The property preserves four 1936 shophouses that once housed Chye Hua Seng Wee Kee, where Chinese labourers sent money and letters home. Its contemporary extension creates a five-storey Urban Wing behind and above the original Heritage Wing.

Chinese Art Deco and Diaspora References

WOHA’s design interprets 1930s Chinese Art Deco through Shanghai plaster, reused wood from the remittance house, brushed timber floors and painted timber panelling inspired by the original fit-out. Calligraphy details, poetic text and remittance-letter excerpts extend the diaspora narrative into the interiors.

A Facade That Keeps Old and New Visible

The conserved facade retains its historic material character and Chinese characters referencing remittance destinations, while the new wing uses an aluminium art facade printed with excerpts from original remittance letters. The two architectural periods remain visually legible rather than being concealed.

Heritage Rooms and Contemporary City-Facing Accommodation

Two Wings, Two Interior Languages

The 48 rooms are divided between 26 rooms in the Heritage Wing and 22 in the Urban Wing. The Heritage Wing occupies the first four floors of the conserved shophouses, while the Urban Wing occupies the upper five floors of the extension.

        From the moment we arrived, the exceptional staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.
        They even allowed us back into a room at 10pm just to shower before a 3am flight.
        The staff’s delightful blend of good-humoured banter and efficient, flawless professionalism made our visit unforgettable.
        The staff couldn't have been more helpful; especially Adam & Lana who looked after us sooo well each morning for breakfast.

        The hotel’s central Clarke Quay location is its strongest feature: it is beside the MRT and buses, near Chinatown, Boat Quay, Marina Bay, restaurants, shopping and riverside attractions. Many guests say key sights are walkable. One recurring practical drawback is that the entrance can be difficult to find.

        Great location, right next to the MRT Station Clark Quay and a bus station with many important bus lines.
        Everything can be done on foot (Merlion, MBS, Chinatown, Arab Street, etc.)
        Just the entrance wasn't too visible enough.

        Everything is new, clean and I really like the interior design of the rooms.
        I really liked the style and size of the room, but it was overstuffed with the furniture. I hardly find space to move around the room because the size of the furniture was too huge compared to the size of the room.
        Very nice rooms with a crazy view of Marina Bay Sands and downtown Singapore.
        Room overlooking the main street, so there was noise present at the beginning of the night.

        The rooftop pool, although very small, has an incredible view of the city and Marina Sands!!!
        The infinity pool on the top floor is only suitable for photos, it’s shallow and kids can only play around in it.
        You can't even swim properly in it on your own. A real disappointment!

        Modern but not cold. Great colours, design elements, great size (not too big) so quick to get about in the hotel. Central but not noisey.
        The design is very pleasant to the eye, the cleanliness is very meticulous, the good smell, the staff is very kind, the quality of the mattress, the size of the accommodation, the comfort, the refined and delicious breakfast, the view!
        Exceptional hospitality and dining at in-house Kee's made this design hotel stay truly special.
        It’s a small boutique hotel which is great for a quiet stay but not great if you want a resort style hotel and people watching.

        There was no complimentary parking and it might be good to have some sort of deal with Clarke Quay Central to offer that to guests.
