Colonial Garrisons Recast as a Contemporary Island Resort

Colonial Garrisons Recast as a Contemporary Island Resort

An 1880s Military Compound

The resort is built around the restored buildings at 48–51 Ironside Road, former British Artillery garrisons constructed in the 1880s. Blocks 48 and 49 contained the Officers’ Mess and unmarried officers’ quarters, while blocks 50 and 51 served married officers and their families.

Tropical Colonial Architecture and Garden Circulation

The heritage core uses brick and plaster construction, red tiled roofs and adaptations for Singapore’s tropical climate. These preserved structures are combined with contemporary villas, landscaped grounds and low-rise outdoor circulation rather than a tower-hotel format.

A Shared Space with Institutional Scale

The Living Room provides a central setting for workshops and activities, while the wider property includes public rooms in the heritage blocks, event foyers, breakout areas and large-scale meeting facilities. The resort’s contemporary history also includes hosting the 2018 summit between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump.

Contemporary Villas Among Restored Heritage Buildings

Contemporary Villas Among Restored Heritage Buildings

Rooms and Villa-Style Units

The accommodation mix combines hotel rooms in a 112-bedroom resort with contemporary villa-style units integrated into the landscaped grounds and the restored colonial compound.

Accommodation within a Historic Compound

The former military buildings serve as a distinct accommodation and public-space component, placing rooms and resort circulation within a preserved tropical colonial setting rather than a newly built standalone complex.

The Knolls, Cassia and Round-the-Clock In-Room Dining

The Knolls, Cassia and Round-the-Clock In-Room Dining

All-Day Dining and Chinese Fine Dining

The Knolls is the all-day dining venue, while Cassia provides Chinese fine dining. Together, the named restaurants cover an informal all-day format and a more formal Chinese dining experience.

Private In-Room Service and Event Catering

24-hour in-room dining extends the food-and-beverage programme beyond the restaurants. The resort’s extensive meeting, wedding and banquet infrastructure also supports event dining across its function rooms, ballroom and pre-function spaces.

Three Pools and Landscaped Sentosa Leisure Grounds

Three Pools and Landscaped Sentosa Leisure Grounds

A Three-Pool Outdoor Setting

The property has three outdoor pools distributed through its broader resort landscape. The multiple-pool arrangement is tied to the villa-and-garden identity rather than a single central aquatic complex.

Gardens, Tennis and Island Resort Circulation

Landscaped grounds connect the heritage buildings, contemporary villas and leisure areas. A tennis court adds an on-site outdoor activity alongside the pools and the low-rise garden setting.

Auriga Spa, 24-Hour Fitness and Workshop-Led Recreation

Auriga Spa, 24-Hour Fitness and Workshop-Led Recreation

Auriga and Around-the-Clock Training

Auriga is the property’s dedicated spa, complemented by a complimentary fitness centre open 24 hours. Together with the three outdoor pools and tennis court, these facilities form the resort’s principal wellness and recreation offering.

From Workshops to Major Meetings

The Living Room hosts workshops and activities, while the wider facilities include more than 2,276 square metres of events space, seven function rooms and a Business Centre with two boardrooms.

Ballroom and Flexible Conference Rooms

The Grand Ballroom measures 8,395.9 square feet and accommodates up to 700 people. Sentosa I, II and III each hold 70 to 100 guests and can combine for up to 170, with floor-to-ceiling windows.

A Quieter Garden Setting within Sentosa Island

A Quieter Garden Setting within Sentosa Island

Resort Island Leisure Environment

The property is located on Sentosa Island, a Singapore resort destination known for leisure attractions, beaches, entertainment and upscale hospitality. Its setting is within Sentosa’s quieter inland resort landscape rather than the city’s dense urban core.

Seclusion with Singapore Beyond the Island

The villa-and-garden environment provides a secluded island context while the broader city of Singapore remains the principal urban reference point. The location combines access to Sentosa’s leisure character with a resort setting separated from central city streets.

Guest Rating: 9.5279 reviews153 relevant reviews analysed

        Overall: What guests say

        97 relevant reviews

Guests repeatedly praise Capella Singapore’s attentive, highly trained service, beautiful tropical setting, and peaceful atmosphere, describing it as a memorable place to relax or celebrate and often saying they would return. Some guests, however, felt the experience fell short of expectations and was difficult to justify at the high nightly rate.

        See the evidence
From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, every detail, every interaction and every experience felt thoughtful, personal and genuinely heartfelt.
The hotel is beautiful, peaceful, and the service is outstanding.
Impeccable hotel in a tropical setting just minutes away from the busy city.
Overall experience does not justify the high price paid

        Staff: What guests say

        104 relevant reviews

Guests repeatedly praise warm, attentive, professional service from arrival through checkout, with staff often remembering preferences and proactively helping. Specific highlights include support for elderly guests using wheelchairs, thoughtful birthday and honeymoon touches, and care for pets. A few guests noted inconsistent service or accumulated lapses when the resort was near full occupancy.

        See the evidence
Every staff member we encountered was excellent
Canny consistently went above and beyond to ensure our preferred tea was available even when it wasn’t on the breakfast menu.
A good example, is one of the staff, willing to bend down and remove the twig at my pet paw after he enjoy his run in the garden, while we are busy waiting for grab.
The resort was running near full occupancy during our stay — something we fully anticipated — and while a degree of service strain is understandable, the lapses accumulated to a point where they noticeably affected the overall experience.

        Rooms: What guests say

        78 relevant reviews

Rooms and villas are often praised as spacious, spotless, comfortable and thoughtfully appointed, with standout sea or garden views, private pools and outdoor tubs. Some guests found villas dated or utilitarian, with disappointing outlooks; reported issues include faulty lighting, a misaligned door lock, ants, a flooding toilet and a nonworking outdoor shower. One guest also noted transparent bathroom doors with little privacy.

        See the evidence
The villa itself was undeniably spacious, but it lacked any meaningful view, which made it feel somewhat underwhelming.
One recurring issue has been the lighting system. The spotlight in the toilet and shower area often remains off despite attempts to adjust the controls, requiring us to walk to the master switch—sometimes inconveniently when undressed.
the Toilet & Bathroom doors were transparent; I mean, there is no privacy.
the room was indeed a spacious one with a big king-size bed and living room with an outside plunge-pool.

        Restaurant: What guests say

        34 relevant reviews

Fiamma is repeatedly praised for excellent Italian food, especially its pasta, pizza, meatballs and tiramisu, alongside attentive service. Cassia is also a standout for Chinese food and special-occasion dining, though service attention reportedly dipped during one dinner and the room was noisy with children. Bob’s Bar earns praise for strong drinks and fried food; hotel dining is expensive, and halal options were requested.

        See the evidence
The Wagyu T-bone steak, the Tartufo pizza, the seafood pasta, the Polpette meat balls and the “blow your mind” Tiramisu makes every dinner an unforgettable experience.
At dinner last night at Cassia, we were very grateful to be assigned the private dining room, which was a lovely gesture. That said, service attention tapered off towards the end of the evening. We found ourselves having to pour our own tea, request hot water refills, and noticed only one staff member covering the entire main dining area.
Bob’s Bar seemed casual but drinks were nice and strong and the fried food amazing. Made for a great casual dinner with a gentle breeze.
Restaurants are expensive and we had to ask for children's menus - they were never offered.

        Breakfast: What guests say

        35 relevant reviews

Many guests praise breakfast at Fiamma for its excellent food, attentive staff, and standout dishes such as abalone noodle soup, dim sum, and eggs Benedict; some also note changing daily options and broad choice. Experiences vary: other guests found the buffet limited or average, and reported queues, crowded service, and restrictions on ordering menu items.

        See the evidence
The food was of exceptional quality and beautifully presented — particularly the dim sum, chicken curry, and abalone noodle soup, which were absolute highlights.
Since we stayed for six nights we noticed the breakfast options changed from day to day which was great. There was always something new to try for breakfast.
Breakfast was the weakest moment: limited variety, underwhelming flavors, and service that fell short of expectations. We queued for a table — something that should never happen at a Capella — and personalization was virtually absent.
We were reminded bluntly that 'you only get one shot at the menu items'.

        Facilities: What guests say

        34 relevant reviews

Guests frequently praise the lush, peaceful grounds, attractive design, pools, restaurants, and well-equipped rooms; the Living Room library and afternoon tea are notable touches. Families and pet owners mention thoughtful amenities and beach access. However, several reviews report aging facilities and maintenance problems, including a leaking shower, drainage and sewage odors, cold jacuzzi, worn towels, and slow service.

        See the evidence
The lush grounds and the serene atmosphere created the perfect backdrop for our family holiday.
The afternoon tea served at the Living Room is a must try and a calming way to spend the afternoon.
The shower didn’t drain and, after 2 minutes of showering, would be full to the brim and spilling over on to the bathroom floor.
The whole resort needs maintenance and is showing its age (our indoor shower leaked into the outdoor shower).

        Location: What guests say

        34 relevant reviews

Capella’s lush, quiet setting beside Palawan Beach is repeatedly praised as a relaxing escape, with beach access in a few minutes and Sentosa attractions nearby. It is outside central Singapore, making it less convenient for a first city-focused visit, though one guest reported a roughly 20-minute ride. Some sea views face merchant ships, and aircraft pass overhead.

        See the evidence
Walking out onto your balcony with a picture perfect view of the beach and being surrounded by nature and birds was a wonderful welcome not easily found in Singapore.
You can walk to the beach in 3 min, maybe 5, depending on room location; beach is nice but not serviced.
This is not the place to stay during a first visit to Singapore. It's just too far out of the core of the city.
Certainly, the sea view is not what one might imagine since the structure is located on Sentosa Island; this means it overlooks a stretch of sea that is used for the anchoring of merchant ships awaiting entry into the port of Singapore.

        Check-in / Check-out: What guests say

        22 relevant reviews

Check-in was often described as smooth and efficient, aided by online pre-arrival arrangements, friendly staff, and welcome drinks. Experiences were not uniformly seamless: some guests faced late room readiness or check-in, and checkout was sometimes slow or messy, particularly during Chinese New Year. Guests also noted thoughtful touches such as flowers and a small tent-house for an infant.

        See the evidence
The check-in process was smooth and efficient as I was contacted beforehand to do pre-check in.
when we were told that the villa was ready, we were shocked to find out the cleaners were still cleaning!
Check in is efficient but check out is a bit slow.
We checked in on Valentine’s Day and were greeted with beautiful flowers, which was such a lovely surprise.

        Pool: What guests say

        20 relevant reviews

Guests frequently praise the beautiful, spacious pools, with several noting that the resort has three and that they are not crowded; the lap pool is quieter. The private plunge pools are a recurring drawback: they can be too small for swimming and may contain leaves or insects. Families also report limited child-friendly pool access, and the 7 p.m. closing time feels early.

The entire property expansive with three pools.
Lovely Pools, one with kids, one without, one 25 m rectangular pool with only two loungers that we managed to snatch for a few hours.
It wasn’t large enough for a proper swim, yet not designed like a jacuzzi either — essentially just a dipping pool.
The ONE family pool at the resort was closed (for adult scuba class) and thus no pool to use.

        Spa: What guests say

        10 relevant reviews

Spa experiences were often enjoyable, with a calm, attractive setting, friendly service, and praise for treatments and therapist Grace. Some guests found treatments underwhelming or a massage poor value; one reported a significant price overcharge. Facilities were described as limited, with no sauna, and the outdoor jacuzzi could get wet in the rain.

        See the evidence
The spa facilities were particularly disappointing — no sauna, and only limited amenities such as a steam room, hot pool, and mist rooms.
Grace, the therapist at the spa, has excellent and professional techniques.
But they over-charged me significantly and told me later it was in the fine print - they could change the price at any time.
However, due to the lack of cover, rain can enter both the outdoor jacuzzi and sofa area.
